Mine Workers in Turkey

The Study Group on Global History of Labour and Social Conflicts FCSH-Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Portugal, conveys their sincere condolences to all relatives and friends of the miners killed in Soma and to all mourning Turkish workers. It is intolerable that in the XXIth century, with all the technological and scientific development available to improve working conditions and safety, the Turkish prime-minister Erdogan dares to compare the tragedy that cost the lives of almost three hundred miners to the situation in the mine fields in England in the nineteenth century. The causes of the Soma catastrophe are not technical nor natural; they are the result of policies that despise human life, protection and safety at work.
